A Texas police chase turned into a rescue effort Sunda when officers saved a fleeing driver trapped in a burning car following a crash.

The incident, which was captured by body and dashboard camera footage, happened at around 1:15 a.m. when Robstown police tried to pull over a stolen vehicle, KIII-TV reports. The driver fled, and a pursuit ensued.

When the car reached an intersection, the driver lost control, and the vehicle flipped end over end. Once it came to rest, the car caught fire.

Officers Danny Martinez and Joshua Rodriguez quickly ran to the disabled vehicle and worked to get the unconscious driver out before the flames spread.

As the vehicle burned, officers ran toward the wreck and found the driver unconscious inside.

"The officers started to work to break the window to get access to the passenger compartment of the vehicle, and while doing that, I think you can see in the video that the car is starting to get fully engulfed," Chief Mike Tamez told KIII.

In order to reach the driver, the officers need to break the driver's side window and cut through a seat belt. After that, they were able to pull the driver to safety. 

"These two officers ran toward danger and they risked their own lives, to make sure that this individual gets to go home," said Tamez.

The 18-year-old driver was rushed to the hospital with injuries that aren't considered life-threatening. He had been in an earlier chase with authorities in Corpus Christi and is expected to face charges related to both incidents.

"Both officers willingly made a decision to sacrifice their own safety to ensure the safety of a complete stranger," the department stated in a social media post. "This is the epitome of selfless service.  

"Today, we would like to honor the courage and selflessness of both officers. Thanks to them, a young will live to see his family."
