Watch Dramatic Chase, Shootout after Ambush of S.C. Police Officer

Recently released dashboard footage captured a frantic car chase and shootout with an armed suspect who ambushed a South Carolina police while he sat in his cruiser last month.

Greenville Police Officer Giordano "Gio" Alberto was parked outside the Greenville County Law Enforcement Center shortly before 1:50 a.m. on Jan. 11 when a suspect armed with a shotgun opened fire, according to the department. Alberto was shot multiple times, and the suspect—identified as David William Lane—fled the scene.

Surveillance camera footage of the ambush had previously been released by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). Investigators revealed that Lane used incendiary rounds to fire at Alberto and his cruiser.

A Greenville County sheriff's deputy spotted the fleeing suspect and began following him. Lane stopped twice to shoot at the deputy before driving away.

Lane was located again, and a chase began with another deputy. In the dashboard camera footage, that deputy stops to fire at Lane, who had also stopped.

After the gunshots, Lane drove away and turned into a parking lot. More deputies joined the chase inside the lot, they were able to surround the suspect, and a deputy rammed Lane's car head-on, while another deputy opened fire.

Lane was pronounced dead at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, WYFF-TV reports. A 12-gauge shotgun and a 9mm handgun were recovered from his car.

"He was well prepared to inflict as much damage as possible," Sheriff Hobart Lewis told WYFF. "Plenty of ammunition, plenty of weapons in the car. Some other things in his apartment that were found later, almost like he was going to go by there and kind of reload and go back out."

Alberto was hospitalizing following the ambush, he's since been released and continues to recover. On Tuesday, he attended President Donald Trump's State of the Union address as an invited guest of U.S. Sen. Tim Scott.

"This is a tremendous honor for Officer Alberto," Chief J.H. Thompson said in a statement. "In just 3½ years with GPD, Officer Alberto has demonstrated resilience and dedication, proudly serving the Greenville Police Department."

SLED continues to investigate the incident.
