An accused reckless driver led California police on a wild chase earlier this month, traveling the wrong way in a heavily damaged vehicle before they were surrounded by SWAT members in armored vehicles and eventually arrested following a brief standoff.

The dramatic pursuit happened just before 11:30 a.m. Sept. 10 when an Alameda County sheriff's deputy working as a school resource officer tried to stop a blue Mustang that was driving recklessly near an elementary school, the agency stated in narration that accompanied drone and body camera footage. The deputy pursued the vehicle, but stop when the driver began traveling the wrong way on Interstate 580 after losing control and crashing into a guardrail.

Deputies launched a drone from the agency's Real Time Information Center and followed the Mustang into San Leandro. Exiting the interstate, the driver pulled into an empty lot, where a deputy tried to stop the vehicle.

Footage from the chase shows the Mustang evading the deputy and eventually getting back on the freeway. The vehicle was traveling the wrong way when it collided with another vehicle.

By this point, the vehicle has sustained severe damage, with the passenger side torn off. Eventually, the Mustang became disabled in the middle of the freeway, and SWAT members in armored vehicles surrounded it.

The two occupants in the vehicle refused to exit the Mustang, and deputies tried "de-escalation negotiations" to get the suspects to surrender. When that didn't work, chemical irritants and a diversonary device were deployed, and the deputies moved in.

"Strategic coordination across multiple units allowed us to safely contain the vehicle and take both occupants into custody," the sheriff's office stated. "Both suspects were arrested and booked into the Santa Rita Jail on several felony violations"
