An Ohio police K-9 officer was seriously injured late Monday when he fell into an empty pond while chasing a fleeing suspect.

Bucyrus police responded to a possible breaking-and-entering incident and identified a suspect during the investigation, the department stated in a social media post. Officers' attempt to take the suspect into custody met with resistance, and the suspect fled on food.

During the chase, a K-9 officer fell into an empty pond and suffered serious injuries, according to the department. The officer was rushed to the hospital, and he is in stable condition. 

Along with Crawford County sheriff's deputies, police set up a perimeter during the chase. Officers finally located and apprehended the suspect.

During the arrest, the suspect continued to resist, and two officers were injured in the struggle. None of the injuries required "serious medical treatment," police said. 

"The Bucyrus Police Department would like to commend all of our officers for their professionalism, dedication, and outstanding teamwork throughout this incident," the department stated. "Their efforts helped bring this situation to a safe conclusion while protecting our community."
