A Utah police K-9 was seriously injured Tuesday after a fall from a freeway overpass while investigating a suspicious package.

Bruno, a Park City police K-9, and his handler were part of a response to help the Utah Highway Patrol with a suspicious package near the Highway 40/Interstate 80 interchange, the police department stated in a news release. During the investigation, Bruno jumped from an overpass and was seriously injured.

The dog was airlifted to an emergency veterinary hospital in Salt Lake City. It's unclear what led Bruno to jump from overpass.

"Bruno is more than a police K-9 - he is a partner, a member of our department, and an important part of the Park City Police family," the department stated "Our thoughts are with Bruno and his handler as he receives the care he needs."
