COLUMBUS, Georgia -- A Columbus police officer and a police K-9 were injured during an officer-involved shooting June 23, while a suspect was fatally shot, according to the Columbus Police Department.

The incident occurred at approximately 12:55 p.m. Members of the Columbus Police Department were involved in the shooting, which left one officer and K-9 Havoc injured. The suspect was pronounced deceased.

In an update released later in the day, the department said K-9 Havoc was transported to Auburn Vet Hospital and remains in stable condition. The K-9 is expected to undergo surgery, and his handler has remained by his side throughout treatment.

The injured officer received medical treatment and is expected to make a full physical recovery, according to the department.

"Today was a difficult day for our community and for #TeamCPD," the department said in a statement. "In a matter of hours, one life was lost, an officer was injured, and one of our K9s was seriously wounded. It serves as a reminder of the dangers our officers face every day while working to protect this community."

Police said there is no ongoing threat to public safety.

As is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has been requested to conduct an independent investigation. The Columbus Police Department's Office of Professional Standards will also conduct an internal review.

The department asked the public to keep the victim's loved ones, K-9 Havoc, the injured officer and members of the agency in their thoughts as the investigation continues.
