An Illinois sheriff's office K-9 died from a neck injury during a training exercise Wednesday.

Cato, a K-9 with the Hancock Sheriff's Office, and her handler, Deputy Milo Koechle, were participating in training at a grade school in Niota when the canine struck a glass door, the agency stated in a news release posted on social media. She suffered a serious neck injury and was rushed to a veterinary hospital in Iowa, where she later died.

No details were released concerning what type of training was being conducted or what led to Cato hitting the glass door.

"Throughout her service, Cato played an important role in supporting our deputies and serving the citizens of Hancock County," the sheriff's office stated. "Her dedication, loyalty, and service will not be forgotten."
