2 Utah Police Officers Killed by Gunman; Deputy, K-9 also Injured

Two Utah police officers were killed Sunday in an exchange of gunfire with an armed suspect during a domestic disturbance that also left a sheriff's deputy and K-9 wounded.

The shooting happened when Tremonton Garland police responded to a disturbance at a home near an elementary school at about 9:30 p.m., KSTU-TV reports. While officers was talking to an occupant, a suspect began firing from inside.

Two officers were fatally shot in the initial exchange. A Box Elder County sheriff's deputy and a K-9 arriving at the scene also were shot and wounded while they were still inside their vehicle.

The gunman then was persuaded by bystanders to drop his weapon and surrender. The suspect was taken into custody, and a SWAT investigated the area to make sure there was no continued danger.

The injured deputy and K-9 were in fair condition following the shooting.

"Tragedies like these rock an entire community, state and even nation," the police department said in a statement. "These officers and their families served theirs every day, and they will forever be remembered as heroes."

The suspect was taken to the Box Elder County Jail on charges of aggravated murder. The Weber County Attorney's Office is coordinating the ongoing investigation.
