While completing a stolen vehicle recovery investigation, a Seattle police officer needed to use his cruiser and his feet to apprehend an armed suspect who fled on a bicycle.

A Seattle police officer needed his cruiser and his feet last month to apprehend an armed suspect who tried to escape authorities on his bicycle.

The incident happened just before 5 p.m. May 20 when police were finishing a stolen vehicle recovery investigation, according to a department news release. Officers had located a possible suspect, who fled on a bicycle.

The suspect weaved in and out of traffic through a parking lot and down an alley. An officer initially pursued in his cruiser, but he exited his vehicle and was able to chase down the suspect on foot.

The suspect was arrested, and a loaded handgun was among the evidence recovered. The suspect was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and obstructing a public officer.

During the incident, the officer who caught the suspect sustained a serious injury to his hand. He was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

The department's General Investigations Unit is leading the investigation into this incident.
