Bodycam: Ohio Police, Man with Shotgun Exchange Gunfire

Nov. 16, 2022
Columbus police shot and wounded a man who pulled a shotgun and opened fire when officers approached him during a call in the city's Hilltop neighborhood.

A gunfight between Ohio police and a man with a shotgun ended with a wounded suspect early Saturday.

The shooting, which was recorded by a Columbus police officer's body camera, happened when police were called to the Hlltop over reports of shots fired, WBNS-TV reports. Reaching the scene, an officer approached a man—identified as Lamar Blue—and in the course of the conversation, the officer asked Blue to remove his hand from his pocket.

That's when Blue pulled a shotgun from behind his body and opened fire at police. The officers returned fire, and Blue was struck as he fled.

Officers eventually found Blue nearby, and he was taken to the hospital. No officers were injured in the incident.

"I believe the quick action of the officer that fired shots saved both those officers' lives," said Police Chief Elaine Bryant during a Monday news conference.

Blue faces two counts of felonious assault in the incident. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is looking into the shooting.
