Ohio police officers faced a close call when a department substation came under fire over the weekend, recently released body camera footage shows.
The video captures Columbus police officers standing in the agency's Linden substation parking lot around 1 a.m. Sunday when shots were fired in their direction from a passing vehicle, WBNS-TV reports. In the footage, an officer describes the incident moments later, saying a vehicle drove past the substation and fired multiple rounds.
Police said officers quickly identified a suspected silver sedan, and a chase began. Investigators said the driver—identified as Samatar Salad—initially stopped for officers, then fled again before crashing.
The footage shows officers ordering Salad to raise his hands as he remained inside the crashed vehicle before he was taken into custody. No officers were injured, though one officer can be heard on video saying a bullet narrowly missed him.
The Fraternal Order of Police said the incident was highly volatile and could have resulted in serious injury or death. Union leaders said officers acted quickly to stop an ongoing threat to public safety.
Salad was later charged with three counts of felonious assault. During his court appearance, he was held on a $750,000 bond. He remains in custody.
