A domestic violence call last week turned into a standoff as Ohio police exchanged gunfire with a 19-year-old man accused of choking and shooting his sister.
The incident happened at 2:35 p.m. Aug. 30 when Columbus police received calls that a man had choked and shot his sister inside a home, according to an agency news release. During one of the calls, the suspect could be heard saying, “Come get me … I got something for you all,” according to police.
When police reached the scene, they searched for the victim, who had already been take to a hospital by a family member. Officers then tried to talk with the suspect—identified as Nathen Thorn—who was barricaded upstairs. Recently released body camera footage captured the call.
Thorn, who was out on bond in connection with a felony assault, allegedly fired multiple rounds at officers, and at least one officer returned fire. A SWAT unit and crisis negotiators were then called in, and Thorn ultimately surrendered at 3:30 p.m.
"(Officers) were holding that stairway with a known violator who's firing at them in there and waited for SWAT," Brian Steel, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #9 and one of the responding officers, told WSYX-TV. "SWAT came. SWAT was able to peacefully negotiate a surrender, which is always what we want."
One officer was treated and released for a minor injury related to the incident. The sister underwent surgery and was in stable condition.
Thorn faces multiple charges, with at least one count of felonious assault. The incident is under investigation.
