June 28, 2022
A chase with an armed murder suspect and a driver ended when their vehicle crashed into a Homewood police officer on a motorcycle on Interstate-59 near Bessemer.

A Homewood police department motor scout was injured this morning after a chase involving an armed murder suspect ended with a crash.

The crash happened on I-59 near one of the Bessemer exits. The fleeing suspects, a male and female, abandoned their vehicle and fled on foot.

The officer was flown to UAB Hospital. The injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Bessemer police, along with officers from multiple surrounding agencies, set up a perimeter and launched a manhunt.

The male suspect, who was said to be armed with an AR-15 and a handgun during the chase, is in custody.

The suspect, however, was not armed when apprehended. Police have recovered multiple guns.

A female—who police say was driving the vehicle—remains at large. Authorities said the male has a murder warrant out of Jefferson County, but did not yet disclose with which agency.

The suspect was taken into custody at 18th Avenue and 25th Street in Bessemer.
