Ala. Police Officer Struck by Suspect Fleeing Parking Lot

An Opelika police officer was responding to a report of a driver hitting a grocery store cart return when the suspect tried to flee the scene, striking and injuring the officer.

A search for a suspect is underway after an Opelika police officer was hit by a vehicle in a grocery store parking lot Wednesday afternoon.

Police said the officer responded to Kroger about 1 p.m. on a report of a driver striking a cart return. As the suspect fled the scene, he or she struck the officer.

The officer, whose name has not been released, was able to call for backup and rescue workers. The officer was taken by ambulance to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Opelika and Auburn police located the suspect’s vehicle a short time later in Auburn. The search for the suspect is ongoing by multiple agencies.
