Mobile police say a man faces a murder charge and seven counts of attempted murder after a shooting death, followed by a running gun battle across several locations that wounded an officer.
Cpl. Katrina Frazier said the sequence of events began about 6:45 p.m. in the 800 block of Bryant Street.
Officers responding to a shooting call found Matthew Richardson, 31, wounded from a gunshot. He died later at the scene.
Investigators identified Zackery Hannah, 20, as responsible for the shooting, as well as an earlier altercation that went unreported where a shot was fired into a vehicle.
Later, investigators believe Hannah got into an altercation with Richardson and a woman at the scene, attempted to shoot the woman and fired the fatal shot at Richardson.
He then fled the scene on foot, carrying a shotgun, into the wooded area of the Glen Acres community, Frazier said.
After officers set up a perimeter, they encountered Hannah on three separate occasions, she said.
During the first, officers entreated for Hannah to surrender before he fired a shot and ran into the woods. During a second encounter, Hannah fired shots at officers after they told him to surrender. During the exchange of gunfire, an officer was wounded in the lower portion of both legs, Frazier said. Hannah again fled into the wooded area.
At that point, Frazier said, he encountered a resident on his property and pointed his weapon at him before fleeing. Then, in the 8000 block of Crowell Street, officers discovered Hannah and told him to drop his weapon.
According to Frazier, Hannah pointed his gun at officers, and gunfire resumed. Hannah was struck multiple times, and a dog was used to assist in taking him into custody. He was transported to the hospital and taken into guarded custody.
Hannah faces charges of murder, seven counts of attempted murder, shooting into an occupied vehicle, causing physical harm of a police animal, menacing, and attempting to elude.
The Mobile Police Department Criminal Investigation Unit will conduct an investigation into the shooting, and the Office of Professional Responsibility will also conduct an administrative review, Frazier said.
The two investigations will be reviewed by the Mobile County District Attorney’s Office. In addition, officers involved will be placed on administrative leave with pay during the initial phase of the investigation.
