Watch: Stolen Vehicle Chase With Mich. Deputies Leads to River Rescue

Kent County sheriff's deputies chased four stolen vehicles before one suspect fled into the Grand River in Grand Rapids and had to be rescued after trying to evade police and tracking dogs.

What to Know

  • Kent County sheriff's deputies pursued four stolen vehicles after responding to a report of a vehicle stolen from a driveway in Ada Township.
  • Tire-deflation devices disabled three vehicles, and the pursuit ended when suspects abandoned vehicles or crashed in Grand Rapids.
  • One juvenile suspect fled into the Grand River while trying to evade police and tracking dogs before being rescued and taken into custody.

A deputy then used a tire-deflation device, flattening tires on three of the four vehicles.

The drivers continued west on Fulton Street. One of the stolen vehicles was abandoned at Ada Cemetery, just off Fulton, while the others continued onto I-96, then I-196.

One vehicle was abandoned on I-196 near Fuller Avenue NE, while two others crashed in the U.S. 131 S-curve in Grand Rapids.

The drivers involved in the U.S. 131 crashes fled the area on foot. Officers quickly captured one of the drivers, while the other got into the Grand River in an attempt to evade police and tracking dogs.

He was rescued.

Both suspects were taken to the Kent County Juvenile Detention Center after receiving medical clearance, sheriff’s deputies said.
