When Lawrenceville police were called to a hospital, they encountered a patient who disarmed and wounded an officer before being shot by a second officer.
A Georgia police officer was attacked and shot by a patient trying to flee a hospital late Wednesday.
The incident occurred at about 10:30 p.m. at a hospital in Lawrenceville, WXIA-TV reports. Police were responding to a call involving a patient who had been involuntarily committed for a mental health condition and had broken through a back door trying to escape.
Once officers reached the scene, they helped hospital staff try to calm the patient down. But the patient tried to take away an officer's gun.
A struggle ensued, and the officer was shot and wounded by the patient. A second officer opened fire, wounding the patient.
The officer and the patient were taken to another hospital, and the officer was later released. The patient was in critical condition in the ICU.
