A Washington, D.C., police officer is in stable condition after he was shot and wounded when gunfire erupted during a foot chase with an armed suspect, who was fatally shot in the incident.

A Washington, D.C., police officer was shot and wounded, and two other officers were injured in an exchange of gunfire Thursday with an armed man, who was fatally shot in the incident.

The shootout happened shortly before 5 p.m. when police responded to a call concerning a gunman arguing with two women near the district's border with Maryland, WTOP-FM reports. The suspect fled when officers confronted him, and a shootout erupted during the foot chase.

“Officers returned fire at the suspect, who was struck multiple times,” said a police spokesperson in an initial statement, adding that the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

One officer was struck by gunfire and rushed to the hospital in stable condition. Two other officers also suffered injuries that weren't considered life-threatening in the exchange. It was unclear if they had been shot, and body camera footage is expected to be released in the next five business days.

“Today’s incident is another reminder of the dangers that our officers face each day when dealing with illegal firearms in our city,” said acting Police Chief Pamela Smith.
