SANIBEL, Florida -- A Sanibel police officer died after he collapsed during a training exercise Sunday.
Officer Anthony Neri was transported to the hospital after suffering the medial emergency where he was pronounced dead, according to a news release.
Neri began his career with the Sanibel Police Department in 2012 as a Police Aide and in 2015 was promoted to the position of Police Officer.
Prior to joining the force, Neri had a 30-year career as a Revenue Officer with the U.S. Department of Treasury. He also had worked 3 years as a police officer with the Union Township, New Jersey Police Department.
He earned his CPR Certification as Professional Rescuer and was a past recipient of the City's Perfect Attendance Award. In 2017, Officer Neri was elected by his peers to serve as their representative on the City of Sanibel Police Pension Board.
Neri earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Kean University, New Jersey. He also held his private pilot license.
"We ask you to keep Officer Neri's family, friends and our entire Sanibel Police Department in your prayers," the department wrote in a statement.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
