A Florida police officer died of medical complications early Tuesday after falling ill during a field force tryout the previous day.
West Palm Beach Police Officer Jeremy Boykins, a two-year veteran of the department, was participating in Emergency Field Force tryouts when he became ill, a news release from the agency stated. He was alert and speaking when he was rushed to the hospital.
Once at the hospital, he underwent surgery but died early Tuesday.
“It is with a heavy heart that I must share the devastating news of Officer Jeremy Boykins’ passing this morning,” said Chief Frank Adderley in a statement. “Jeremy was not only a dedicated officer, but also a beloved friend and colleague to many of us.”
Boykins, 29, had served in the department's road and the Bike Patrol Unit. He received the Anthony Testa Tactical Lifesaving Award for saving a gunshot victim in December 2022. Boykins also received three certificates of commendation and a certificate of appreciation.
He is survived by his wife and two children.
