Detroit Police Officer Run Down by Fleeing Drag Racer Shoots Driver

A Detroit police officer investigating a report of illegal street racing was struck by a fleeing vehicle before shooting and wounding the driver several times.

A Detroit police officer shot and wounded a fleeing drag racer after he was run down by the driver early Sunday.

The incident happened at about 3 a.m. when officers responded to a call about illegal street racing near the state fairgrounds, WJBK-TV reports. As police began investigating the large gathering of vehicles, one of the drivers fled and struck an officer.

Despite being hit, the officer was able to fire several shots, which struck the driver. The driver and the officer were rushed to the hospital, but no details were released about their conditions.

The case has been turned over to the Homicide Task Force, and the Michigan State Police will lead the investigation, according to a release by the Detroit Police Department.
