A Philadelphia police officer was dragged for several blocks by an SUV that sped away during a traffic stop Tuesday.

The incident happened shortly after 9 p.m. after police pulled over the 25-year-old driver of a Nissan Murano, KYW-TV reports. During the stop, officers noticed the driver was carrying a gun in his sweatshirt pocket, and he was asked about the weapon.

That's when the driver fled at a high rate of speed, dragging one of the officers. The SUV traveled for several blocks before crashing into two cars.

Following the crash, the officer was able to get control of the SUV. The driver also was taken into custody by other officers on the scene.

The dragged driver was taken to the hospital in stable condition. He suffered cuts and bruises from the incident and is expected to recover.

“The officer is extremely lucky,” Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

A semi-automatic gun was recovered at the scene, and it was discovered that the car had been stolen. The driver was arrested and was charged with assault on police, resisting arrest and other counts.
