Two deputies following the sound of screams may have stepped into a trap when they were greeted by a woman “attacking them with a knife,” according to Florida investigators.
Their response was to shoot at the woman, who was then fatally wounded, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said in a May 8 news release.
She died at a hospital and investigators are still piecing together what prompted the attack.
The confrontation happened around 11 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, at an apartment in the Oak Ridge community just south of Orlando.
The shooting took place when Orange County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to reports of someone being attacked at a home in the 3900 block of Titelist Court near Orlando, officials said.
“We received a 911 call from someone claiming to have been battered and strangled in an apartment in the 3900 block of Titelist Court. While deputies were outside the apartment, they heard screaming and breached the front door,” the sheriff’s office said.
“They entered and heard screaming coming from a room at the back of the apartment. As deputies cleared the apartment, a subject appeared and began attacking them with a knife. Two deputies discharged their agency-issued firearms, striking the subject, a woman in her late twenties.”
The deputies were not hurt in the attack, officials said.
Investigators have not released the woman’s identity and have not said if any victim of an assault was found at the home.
“The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting and will turn over its findings to the State Attorney’s Office for review,” the sheriff’s office said.
“Once that process is completed, OCSO will conduct its own internal investigation. The deputies who fired their weapons are on temporary, paid administrative leave pending the initial FDLE review.”
