Body camera footage captures a Houston police sergeant escaping serious injury and wounding a "jugging" suspect who pinned the officer between two cars last month.
The shooting happened May 25 near the Galleria Mall when Houston officers working off-duty security jobs in uniform had spotted a vehicle connected to a jugging case, KHOU-TV reports. Jugging is when offenders follow individuals into a bank or ATM kiosk to rob them.
When officers approached the vehicle, the driver pulled away and drove on the opposite side of the road. A police sergeant then tried to get the vehicle to leave, and that's when the officer was pinned between the suspect vehicle and another car.
The sergeant opened fire, and the driver—identified as Maxie Ray Whitaker, 42—was struck multiple times. Whitaker fled on foot across the street before collapsing, and officers began rendering aid.
"Sir, you shot me for nothing!" Whitaker said.
"You almost killed me, (expletive)!" Marquez told Whitaker as he was taken into custody. "You almost (expletive) killed me."
The sergeant was rushed to the hospital, where he was treated and released. Whitaker remains at the hospital following the shooting.
