An Oklahoma police officer's radio stopped a slashing knife when a suspect charged at authorities in a deadly early morning clash earlier this month.
The incident happened June 4 when Oklahoma City police responded to a call about an attempted suicide at a residence, KOTV-TV reports. A caller had told dispatchers that they were assaulted by a family member when they tried to stop the attempt.
As officers approached the front door of the home, a man—later identified as Eddie Hill, 49—came charging from inside, brandishing a knife. An officer's body camera captured footage of the attack.
Officers ordered Hill to drop the knife and surrender, but the man continued to advance. The officer's radio deflected one of the knife strikes and stopped hill from stabbing the officer.
Finally, officers began firing and struck Hill. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The shooting is under investigation.
