A man impersonating a law enforcement officer pulled a gun and began shooting at two Florida deputies, who returned fire and fatally wounded the suspect earlier this year.

The shooting happened at around 3:45 p.m Jan. 15 when two Harris County sheriff's deputies responded to a call of a man claiming to be a law enforcement officer and refusing to leave a woman's property, according to an agency news release that included body camera footage. At the scene, the deputies spoke with the suspect, later identified as Jose Anselmo Bonilla Urbina, who told repeated the claim that he was a law enforcement officer but refused to provide identification. 

Suddenly, Bonillia drew a handgun covered in plastic and opened fire. The deputies scrambled for cover and returned fire.

Bonillia was struck in the exchange, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The sheriff’s office's Homicide Unit and the Harris County District Attorney's Office are investigating the incident.
