A man wanted on outstanding 2023 warrants opened fire on Tennessee police officers who returned fire during a motel standoff earlier this month.

The shootout happened at around 1 p.m. Sept. 3 after Nashville police spotted a stolen Infiniti Q50 in the parking lot of the Royal Inn, the department stated in a news release. Motel employees told police that the vehicle's occupants were in a first-floor room, and officers began knocking on the door for several minutes.

When officers opened the door, a man and a woman came out, and they were detained. But another man—later identified as Christopher Whitaker—barricaded himself in the bathroom and refused to exit.

Whitaker then began shooting at police from the bathroom. Officers Jacob Krispin and Randy Puckett, nine-year veterans of the department, took cover and returned fire after taking cover.

Eventually, Whitaker surrendered and was taken into custody. No one was injured in the exchange of gunfire.

Whitaker was wanted on two outstanding failure to appear warrants from 2023, and he was charged with four counts of aggravated assault on police officers and other charges.
