Tenn. Police Officer Shot During Stop; Search Underway for 'Armed and Dangerous' Suspect

Authorities are searching for 40-year-old suspect accused of shooting a Tennessee police officer.

A Blue Alert was issued Friday for Danell Maxwell by Memphis police the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI). Maxwell is wanted for criminal attempt first degree murder on a police officer.

Memphis police have released no details about the shooting or the injured officer, but a city official revealed some information on social media. According to Councilman JB Smiley Jr., the Memphis police officer was shot during a traffic stop.

"An attack on one of our officers is an attack on the safety of our entire community," he wrote. "The men and women who wear the badge put their lives on the line every single day even during routine traffic stops and this kind of violence cannot and will not be tolerated."

Maxwell was armed with a silver handgun, according to the TBI. He also is "considered armed and dangerous." 

Memphis police and the TBI is asking for anyone with information about Maxwell to contact them.
