Body camera footage from a Florida marine unit captured officers stopping an 8-year-old boy on a Jet Ski last month.

The surprising stop happened shortly after 2:30 p.m. June 14 as a Sarasota police marine unit was patrolling off the coast of Lido Key, the department stated in body camera footage of the incident. That's when officers came upon a boy on a personal watercraft.

"Where's your parents," one of the officers asks the 8-year-old.

Police then encountered the boy's parents after the child led them to their location. When an officer asked why the boy was on a Jet Ski, the child's dad explained the boy had plenty of experience.

"I really don’t think that he’s legal to ride, right?" the father said. "But we have been using Jet Skis on the lake for the last few years. He’s very proficient.”

That explanation didn't fly with officers, however.

"It's illegal for to allow a person under 14 years of age to operate a personal watercraft and it's a second-degree misdemeanor," the department stated. "As a result, the father of the boy will have to appear in court."
