What to know

  • Security and bodycam footage captured a Sept. 7 knife attack on an NYPD officer at the 73rd Precinct in Brooklyn, where a suspect slashed the officer in the face with a 14-inch butcher knife.

  • The six-year NYPD veteran was hospitalized and later released, while officers fatally shot the suspect after he fled and lunged at another officer during a foot pursuit.

  • Police union leaders called the assault a targeted attack on law enforcement and praised the officer’s recovery and bravery.

The injured officer, who is a six-year veteran with the department and comes from a police family, was taken to the hospital, where she was treated and released. A video posted to social media by the NYPD's union showed the officer receiving applause as she left the hospital in a wheelchair.

“Thank God our sister is on the road to recovery, but this was a clear targeted attack on New York City police officers," Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Hendry said in a statement released with the video. "This individual had no fear when he walked into a police precinct and attacked a uniformed cop — there is no telling what he might have done to innocent New Yorkers out on the street."
