Violent Fatal Stabbing of N.M. Police Officer Caught in Graphic Video

March 4, 2024
"That is the worst video I've ever watched in my life, and I've watched a lot of bad videos," said Las Cruces Police Chief Jeremy Story about the fatal stabbing of Officer Jonah Hernandez.

Graphic security camera and body camera footage was released capturing the violent stabbing of a New Mexico police officer last month.

"That is the worst video I've ever watched in my life, and I've watched a lot of bad videos," said Las Cruces Police Chief Jeremy Story about the fatal stabbing of Officer Jonah Hernandez.

During a Friday news conference, Story said the department was committed to making changes to prevent a tragedy like Hernandez's killing from happening again, KOAT-TV reports. He outlined areas of focus, including filling the department's 25 vacancies and creating a real-time crime center.

"I've said previously that I will not let Jonah's death be in vain," said Story. "I'm committed to that statement. I will not stop until we see the change that makes Las Cruces and New Mexico safer."

In the footage released during the news conference, Hernandez is seen approaching a man identified as Armando Silva following a 9-1-1 call on Feb. 11 concerning a man trespassing. As the two talk, Silva advances on Hernandez, pulls a knife and begins repeatedly stabbing the officer.

A man who witnessed the attack returned to his vehicle and grabbed a gun. The bystander confronted and fatally shot Silva.

The witness and his girlfriend tried to help the injured Hernandez and called 9-1-1. Hernandez was rushed to the hospital, where he died.
