Las Cruces Police Officer Jonah Hernandez was stabbed at least once by a 28-year-old suspect, who was shot and killed by a bystander who witnessed the incident.

A New Mexico police officer died Sunday after he was stabbed by a trespassing suspect.

Las Cruces Police Officer Jonah Hernandez responded to a trespassing call shortly before 5 p.m., the department stated in a social media post. That's when he was stabbed at least once by a 29-year-old suspect, who was shot and killed by a bystander who saw at least part of the incident.

A witness used Hernandez's radio to call dispatch, and the officer was rushed to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Hernandez had been with the department for two years. He's survived by a wife and two sons, 10 and 2.
