Ohio police tried to de-escalate a tense situation with a gunman before the suspect opened fire and was critically wounded by police early Thursday.
The incident, which was captured by a body camera worn by a responding Columbus police officer, happened shortly before 5:15 a.m. when authorities received a call of shots fired at a restaurant, WBNS-TV reports. Once officers reached the scene, they encountered a 26-year-old man with a gun.
In the video, police are seen crouching behind vehicles and trying to convince the suspect to surrender. After about five minutes the gunman began shooting, and an officer returned fire.
The suspect was struck and taken to the hospital in critical condition. Doctors were able to stabilize his condition.
No officers were injured in the incident. The Ohio Bureau of Investigation is looking into the shooting.
