An original etching print by Pablo Picasso that was stolen in 2018 was dropped off at a Milwaukee police station last month, and the handoff was caught by security cameras.
"Torero," a 1949 Picasso etching print, was suspected to have been stolen from a Milwaukee art gallery on Feb. 16, 2018, according to a police news release. A community member walked into the Milwaukee Police District Four on Aug. 5 and returned the artwork to officers.
Security camera footage captured the individual giving the print to officers at the department.
On Aug. 6, an authenticator established that the etching print was indeed the same piece of art stolen from the gallery in 2018. Now, police are trying to find the etching print's owner.
"The Milwaukee Police Department is grateful that this community member recognized the etching print and did the right thing and returned it. We are better together," the department stated.
