'Is That Your Squad?': Wis. Man Steals Police Cruiser Again

A 34-year-old man is accused of stealing a cruiser for the second time in six months, this time driving off with a unit while Shorewood police officers were conducting a traffic stop.

A Wisconsin man is accused of stealing a police cruiser for the second time in about six months.

The incident happened May 30 as Shorewood police were conducting a traffic stop, WISN-TV reports. That's when Daniel Barton, 34, allegedly took off with a police unit, driving past officers.

"Is that your squad? That’s your squad," one officer is heard asking in recently released body camera footage.

"Someone just stole my squad," another officer says to dispatchers.

Milwaukee police were able to locate Barton after a brief search. He was found at a gym and taken into custody.

Barton is no stranger to stealing police units. He also is accused of stealing a Milwaukee police cruiser in December.

In that incident, Barton allegedly drove off with the patrol car while an officer was working a traffic stop. Dashboard camera footage showed him "giggling as he drives off," police said.

Barton ditched the cruiser before police caught up with him. He was hiding in a garbage can this time.

Shorewood police are now reviewing practices and procedures following last month's theft, according to Chief Heather Wurth.
