Feb. 04--A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper was taken to the hospital after he wrecked his patrol car just south of Kamey on U.S. Highway 87 South about 10:50 a.m. Friday.
Ronald Johnson, who works in the Port Lavaca office, was driving south across an overpass, when he lost control of the vehicle, said DPS Public Information Officer Trooper Gerald Bryant.
He slid about 100 yards off the right side of the roadway, down a steep incline before hitting a shallow ditch and resting near a fence.
Witnesses reported Johnson was knocked unconscious for a few minutes, Bryant said.
He was conscious and talking by the time an ambulance took him to Citizens Medical Center.
Johnson was in stable condition Friday afternoon, but will remain hospitalized overnight for observation, Bryant said.
Since Johnson mostly responds to Calhoun County dispatch, Bryant, from the Victoria office, said it's unclear if Johnson was responding to a collision at the time of his accident.
Bryant said DPS responded to six accidents from 8 to 11 p.m. Thursday and that the department responded to one wreck right after another through Friday morning.
"Our communication has been solid," Bryant added.
The patrol car sustained minor damage to the back right door, he added.
