A Texas Highway Patrol trooper was killed in a collision with a tractor-trailer Wednesday.

Trooper Sergio Romero was trying to pull over a vehicle at about 4 p.m. near Childress when the crash happened, according to the Department of Public Safety. As he was attempting the stop, a tractor-trailer pulled out in front of Romero, leading to a collision between the semi and Romero's cruiser.

Romero, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene. No details were released about the condition of the tractor-trailer's driver.

“Today, we grieve the loss of one of our own,” Col. Freeman F. Martin said in a statement. “Trooper Sergio Romero served the people of his community and the state of Texas with courage, integrity and selfless devotion. Our hearts break alongside his family, friends, fellow Troopers and all who loved him. We will never forget the ultimate sacrifice he made in service of his fellow Texans.”

Before joining the Department of Public Safety, Romero had served with the Hall County Sheriff's Office. He is survived by his wife, Francisca, and two sons.

The crash is under investigation.
