"Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of one of our own who exemplified courage, dedication, and selfless service to the people of Texas," the Texas Department of Public Safety Officers Association stated in a social media post. "We extend our deepest prayers and condolences to his family, friends, and fellow Troopers during this difficult time."

The name of the trooper has not been released.

"As a retired Texas Ranger and former DPS Trooper, I honor this Trooper’s service and ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty," Montgomery County Sheriff Wesley Doolittle wrote in a social media post. "My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and fellow Texas DPS Troopers during this difficult time."
