Miss. Police Officer Killed, Another Wounded in Hostage Standoff

Madison Police Officer Horren Randy Tyler was fatally shot and a Brandon police officer was wounded while responding to a hostage situation and standoff that ended when the suspect was shot and killed.
Two Mississippi police officers were shot—one fatally—during a hostage situation-turned-standoff Thursday that ended when the suspect was killed.
Brandon police responded to a domestic disturbance at a home at around 1:45 a.m., and Chief Wayne Dearman said officers were shot at as they arrived, WAPT-TV reports. One officer—Horren Randy Tyler—was struck by the initial gunfire and taken to the hospital in stable condition.
The suspect barricaded himself inside the home with a hostage, but a SWAT unit was able to enter the house and rescue the hostage after about an hour. Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the incident, including Brandon police and the Rankin County Sheriff's Office.
Shots rang out again at around 9:30 a.m. During that final confrontation, a Madison police officer and the suspect were shot and killed.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is looking into the shooting.
Randy Tyler was a seven-year veteran of the Madison police force, serving as a field training coordinator, overseeing the training and career development of newly hired officers. He was also a supervisor in the Narcotics Division and was a member of the on the Special Response Team. Before working in Madison, Randy Tyler was the Ridgeland police chief.
