A Mississippi police officer was killed, and two other officers were wounded in an exchange of gunfire with a suspect at a checkpoint Thursday.

Summit Police Officer Troy Floyd was working at a traffic checkpoint when the passenger in a car driving by began shooting, WAPT-TV reports. Floyd was shot and killed by the gunfire.

A shootout with the suspect erupted when two McComb police officers—Tyler Harvey and Joey Roberts—reached the scene. The officers were wounded, and the suspect was fatally shot.

According to the Enterprise-Journal, Roberts was shot in the leg during the exchange. It's unclear how Harvey was injured, but both officers are expected to recover.

"Today, Mississippi lost one of our heroes in blue," Gov. Tate Reeves stated in a social media post. "Summit Police Department Patrolman Troy Floyd was killed today by a criminal, while heroically performing his duties as a law enforcement officer."

"Our men and women of law enforcement represent the very best of Mississippi," he added. "All of Mississippi stands with them as we honor and mourn this hero who has been taken from us too soon."

The suspect has not been identified, and it's not clear what led to the shooting. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is looking into the incident.

"I've been the mayor here since 2006, and I've never had to deal with this before," said Summit Mayor Percy Robinson, per WAPT. "So, you know, even being in Iraq, I saw death, but when it hits home, it's devastating."
