Houston police early Thursday shot a man several times after he allegedly opened fire on them with a rifle following a brief car chase, officials said.
A 34-year-old man was taken to the hospital with several gunshot wounds, said Wyatt Martin, assistant chief for the Houston Police Department. Investigators weren't yet sure of the man's condition.
Two officers at 12:57 a.m. noticed a vehicle driving erratically and began to follow it. The vehicle turned south on Bingle Road, just south of U.S. 290, when it lost control and hit a tree, before spinning out, Martin said.
The driver then allegedly fired at police with an AK-47-style rifle through the windshield of his car, Martin said.
Officers returned fire and struck the man several times, including in the arm and leg, Martin said.
Video from the crime scene shows a patrol car and truck riddled with bullets.
