Two Broward Sheriff’s deputies were injured in a late-night pursuit of a reckless driver in Lauderhill.
Deputies went to the area of State Road 7 and Oakland Park Boulevard Tuesday just before 11 p.m. to check on a report of a vehicle driving recklessly, the Sheriff’s Office said.
When the car was spotted, a deputy who was on foot tried to make the car pull over. But the driver did not stop and chose to flee, hitting the deputy.
A car chase began, involving the driver and at least one Broward deputy. The pursuit ended in the City of Lauderhill when the cars crashed, Broward Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Carey Codd said in a statement.
The crash involved “several vehicles,” according to the Sheriff’s Office, but they did not elaborate on the other cars involved.
The driver who instigated the police pursuit tried to run after the crash, but was caught by deputies and Lauderhill police, Codd said.
Both the deputy hit by the car and the deputy involved in the crash were taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
A driver involved in the crash was also treated for injuries, according to Codd’s statement. It was unclear if the injured driver was the suspect or someone that got caught up in the post-pursuit crash.
As of 1:15 a.m. detectives with the Broward Traffic Homicide and Violent Crimes units were investigating at the scene, and Oakland Park Boulevard was closed between Rock Island Road and Northwest 55th Avenue as a result.
