Dallas police recovered a college police sergeant's stolen vehicle with ammunition, body armor and other gear inside during a traffic stop earlier this week.

Officers pulled over a Dodge Charger without its headlights on traveling in the wrong direction on a one-way street shortly after 2 a.m. Monday, the department stated in a news release. When officers approached the driver, he was sweating profusely and couldn't turn on the headlights.

During the stop, police noticed police uniforms, emergency lights and other law enforcement equipment inside the vehicle. Officers also were familiar with the driver, who wasn't registered to the vehicle, from prior contacts, and he was arrested for multiple traffic violations.

A vehicle inventory search recovered a police badge, roughly 500 rounds of ammunition, multiple bulletproof vests and other law enforcement gear with the name of the registered owner, a Dallas College Police Department sergeant. The sergeant told police that he was unaware the vehicle was missing, and video footage showed that the driver had entered the vehicle about hour before the stop.

Along with traffic violations, the driver also was arrested for the unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. The duty gear was returned to the sergeant at the scene.

“These officers exemplify the vigilance and investigative tenacity that defines the Dallas Police Department,” Assistant Chief Teena Schultz said in a statement. “What began as a routine traffic stop became a prime example of how attention to detail can prevent further crime.”

The incident remains under investigation.
