GRANT COUNTY, Indiana -- An Indiana State Police vehicle was struck by a semi-truck earlier Monday while parked at a crash scene on Interstate 69 in Grant County.
Trooper A.J. Coffee was outside his marked patrol vehicle at the time of the collision, according to a news release.
Emergency lights were activated when the semi-truck struck the patrol car. No injuries were reported.
The incident highlights the ongoing risks troopers and other first responders face while working traffic incidents along high-speed roadways. Law enforcement officials continue to emphasize the importance of motorists slowing down, moving over when possible, and remaining alert when approaching emergency scenes.
Move Over and Slow Down laws are designed to reduce secondary crashes and protect officers, emergency medical personnel, and motorists operating near active incidents. Despite these laws, patrol vehicles continue to be struck while officers are conducting traffic control and crash investigations.
The Indiana State Police urged drivers to exercise caution, reduce speed, and provide adequate space when approaching emergency vehicles on the roadside to help prevent similar incidents.
"Slow down. Drive cautiously. Stop crashing into our troopers," the agency wrote in the statement.
