Delaware County Sheriff's Office Cpl. Blake Reynolds was responding to a disabled tractor-trailer along Interstate 69 at around 3:30 a.m. when the crash happened, ABC News reports. The semi was partially in the roadway, and Reynolds was outside of his vehicle, which was parked behind the rig with its emergency lights on.

That's when the driver of another semi lost control of the vehicle and struck Reynolds' cruiser and the disabled tractor-trailer, Chief Deputy Jeff Stanley said in a statement. Reynolds was struck by the impact of the crash.

"Multiple agencies responded immediately, and life-saving measures were attempted at the scene," said Stanley. "Despite every effort, Corporeal Reynolds succumbed to his injuries."

"Blake was known for his unwavering dedication to duty, his compassion for others, and his deep commitment to serving the people of Delaware County," said Stanley.
