Dashcam: Calif. Deputy Drives Through Wildfire to Save Couple

Sept. 12, 2022
Low visibility and flames touching his vehicle didn't stop an El Dorado County sheriff's deputy from rescuing an elderly couple and their two dogs who were stranded in the Mosquito Fire.

A California sheriff's deputy drove through the raging flames of a wildfire to rescue an elderly couple and their dogs after their vehicle broke down.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office posted a video online from a deputy's dashboard camera that had captured the rescue of the couple that was stranded as the Mosquito Fire raged. In the video, the deputy is seen driving through the fire line to reach the couple, despite visibility being low and the wildfire surrounding him.

In fact, the visibility became so bad that the deputy had to stop, even though flames were touching his cruiser. Fortunately, wind gusts blew away the smoke, and the deputy, the couple and dogs were able to escape.

"Everyone and the dogs are safe thanks to our deputy," the agency stated.

The Mosquito Fire erupted late Tuesday in Placer County but grew less extreme over the weekend, The Sacramento Bee reports. It has burned over 46,000 acres in the foothills east of Sacramento and has displaced over 11,000 residents.
