Tulsa police were investigating a report of a woman kicking and dragging a small puppy when the suspect threw the dog at an officer before trying to flee.

A sure-handed Oklahoma police officer made an unusual catch when a woman threw a puppy at him.

The incident happened just before 5 p.m. New Year's Eve as Tulsa police officers were investigating a report of a woman kicking and dragging a small puppy, the department stated in a news release. Witnesses tried to stop the abuse, but the woman threatened them.

When police arrived at the scene, an officer talked with the woman—identified as Sarah Powell—about the incident. Powell became angered and threw the puppy at the officer in an effort to escape.

The officer was able to catch the airborne canine, and other officers at the scene helped apprehend Powell.

The puppy suffered scrapes and cuts on his feet and stomach. He was given to the City of Tulsa Animal Welfare for treatment and care.

Powell was arrested and charged with cruelty to animals after a former conviction of a felony, obstruction of an officer and threatening a violent act.
