OKLAHOMA COUNTY, Okla. -- Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office deputies rescued a puppy found abandoned inside a filthy apartment, where the animal was confined to a bathroom without food or water, according to the agency.
Deputies said the bathroom door was held shut with a broomstick, preventing the puppy from leaving the room. The animal was removed from the residence and secured by deputies. No injuries were reported by the Sheriff’s Office at the time of the rescue.
Under Oklahoma law, animal cruelty includes depriving an animal of necessary food, drink, shelter or veterinary care to prevent suffering. According to Okla. Stat. tit. 21 § 1685, the offense is a felony and is punishable by up to one year in the county jail or a prison term of up to five years, at the court’s discretion. A fine of up to $5,000 may be assessed instead of or in addition to incarceration.
The Sheriff’s Office said charges will be pursued against the dog’s owner. Further details, including the status of the investigation and potential court proceedings, were not immediately released.
