WABASH, Indiana -- A Wabash police officer was shot and wounded while responding to a domestic dispute Thursday morning.

Officers were called to a home at 294 E. Maple Street around 7 a.m. and found 32-year-old William Sendelbach standing outside with a shotgun, according to WANE-TV.

Sendelbach opened fire and hit Officer Nick Brubaker in the leg.  The 23-year veteran of the force suffered non-life threatening injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.

Officers returned fire, hitting Sendelbach several times. He was flow to a Fort Wayne hospital for treatment and his condition is unknown at this time.

When police went inside the home, officers found the suspect's 10-year-old son with apparent stab wounds. He was taken to Riley Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

"It's a tragic situation,” Indiana State Police Public Information Officer Sgt. Tony Slocum told reporters. "It kind of boggles your mind why someone would allegedly stab a ten-year-old and then would want to shoot at police officers."

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
