Authorities are searching for a 35-year-old man who allegedly shot and wounded a Phoenix police officer, who underwent surgery following the shooting.

Phoenix police are searching for a man accused of shooting and wounding an officer Thursday.

The incident happened when officers responded to a domestic violence call at a gas station, KTVK-TV reports. A woman had run into the station and told police she was afraid of a man, who was romantically involved with her.

When officers arrived at the scene, the man—identified as Nicholas Cody Cowan, 35—drove into the station's parking lot and opened fire. One officer was struck, while another officer returned fire as Cowan sped away.

The wounded officer was taken to the hospital, where she underwent surgery. Officials did not know the extent of her injuries. The officer, who was not identified, has been with the department for nearly 25 years, and she has a spouse who also is a Phoenix police officer.

“This is a family of public servants to our community,” Police Chief Jeri Williams said during a press conference.

A "blue alert" was issued following the shooting, and a manhunt began to find Cowan.
